I beg to differ that the "obvious" answer is to close the Academy. Yes, the number of students could be absorbed into their respective schools, many of which are already overcrowded and dilapidated, namely the middle school.

It seems from my standpoint that the Academy, in its 12th successful year, had never received support from the Serio administration. For as long as my children have been in the EH school system, it has always had budget problems. I remember 12 years ago, on back to school night at Deer Run, being told by my son's 2nd grade teacher that she was simply overwhelmed. She stated there were going to be 28 students in the class and she wasn't getting an aide that year. She also told us to expect many xeroxed ditto sheets coming home, because they didn't have funding for new books. That was 12 years ago and it seems much hasn't changed.

Both of my children have attended the Academy and I rave about their experiences' there. I clearly understand the need for children who require extra help to have the right to receive it. I also understand that children who can handle a harder curriculum have the right to be challenged and deserve the additional opportunities a school such as the Academy provides. A letter was written last week in the Courier regarding closing of the Academy. The author stated the school's time has come and gone and that we need to institute a town wide "gifted and talented" program. I would like to clarify that the Academy is a townwide program. It is open to any East Haven student who is recommended by a teacher and who passes the entrance exam. The passing of the test is no different than any other private or magnet school. This seems to be a bone of contention for many parents. I don't understand why people don't get this. If your child would not flourish in a school with a more hands on curriculum, why would you want to set them up for possible failure? It is not the fault of the children who attend this school, as it is not the fault of the children who require extra assistance. We need a fair and balanced board of education for all of our childrens needs.

The Academy seems to be one of the shining stars of this school system. Why are we so quick to try to close a school that won the Blue Ribbon award just 4 years ago? Other shoreline towns are envious of the successes of the Academy. They look down on East Haven and it makes me proud to say what this school has done for our students in the last 12 years. We need a fair and balanced system for our children, they are our future.

Unfortunately, for a lot of people, the obvious answer to this budget problem is to the close the East Haven Academy. The number of students could easily be absorbed by the other schools and it would save the town more than half of the deficit. There are many students in this town that require one-on-one attention and to consider laying off the aids would be a huge dis-service to those children in need, as would making classroom sizes larger. This town has repeatedly had trouble with the calibar of education, why would anyone want to see it go down even further? Mayor April Capone-Almon does not have children, and we all need to remember that.
