“It’s basically based on my life experiences,” said Kathryn Kozlicky, author of Confessions: A Collection of Poetry, her recently released book. “They’re not all happy. A lot of them are actually on the sadder side, but I think they’re stories…that other people can relate to because they happen to everybody at one point and time or another. It’s just how you work through them.”
Born and raised in Groton, Kozlicky said the book, which was published May 24, features several poems and describes them as typical rhyming poetry. Many of the poems are based on her life experiences. She explained that she has been writing since she was 13 years old and has been a fan of the medium for many years.
“I love to write,” she added. “It’s an outlet for me.”
She said writing a book of poetry has been something she has wanted to do for the past 10 years. She finally decided to give it a shot, because she knew it would be a good way for her to release feelings and emotions that she’d built up inside over time.
“I figured if it could help one person out there, if anyone can relate to what I’m saying in the book, if it helps them a little bit, it’s all worth it,” she said.
It took Kozlicky only three months to write the book.
“I believe there are about 56 [poems] in the book,” she explained. Out of those 56 poems, she continued, she only featured two poems she had written in the past. All of the others were inspired while writing the book.
“Writing is something that when it comes to me…it’s almost like I can hear it and I just write it down,” she said. “I don’t stop and think about it. I just write whatever I hear.”
She said it took another two and a half months for her to send the finished product to the Maryland-based publisher PublishAmerica and for her work to be put into print. The book is now available on a variety of online stores and on her Web sites.
“It’s my life, basically in print,” Kozlicky said. “I was a little nervous about that, putting it out there the way that I did, but I feel good about it…It was a very freeing experience for me to be able to write like that.”
