Police Incident Report: Dec. 18 to Jan. 1

The Guilford Courier publishes a Police Incident Report to inform residents of incidents, criminal activities, and police responses occurring in town. As those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the report does not include names. It may be edited for length and content.

Thursday, Dec. 18
No arrests were made.
• The principal reported a theft at Calvin Leete School, 280 South Union St., 10:30 a.m. No other details were available.
• A resident made an 11:01 a.m. report of harassment via letter and then reported coming home to find the front door “wide open,” 12:29 p.m.
• Animal nuisance, goats running through yard, Jefferson Drive, 1:12 p.m.
• Theft, painting stolen from the lobby, Yale-New Haven Medical Center, 111 Goose Lane.
• Police assisted New Haven police by locating a person at a Woodland Road residence, 4:18 p.m. The person was wanted on a warrant for charges including conspiracy, evidence tampering, and interfering with an officer.
• Youths skateboarding on private property, 66 High Street building, 4:34 p.m.

Friday, Dec. 19
No arrests were made.
• Attempted burglary, suspicious man in trailer, Boston Post Road, 2200 block, 9:51 a.m. A K-9 unit from a neighboring town assisted with a police search of the area.
• Two youths were reported for throwing snowballs at passing vehicles, Whitfield Street, 4:12 p.m.
• Criminal mischief, snowballs struck driver’s vehicle, Whitfield Street, 6:02 p.m.
• Structure fire, 93 Wildrose Avenue, 8:03 p.m. Guilford Fire Department responded.
• Criminal mischief, snowballs thrown at house, White Birch Drive, 8:56 p.m.
• Person refusing to move a vehicle, directing profane language at Dept. of Public Works employee, Nut Plains Road West, 9:58 p.m. The vehicle was moved.
• Family dispute, Wauwinet Trail, 10:02 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 20
No arrests were made.
• Suspicious activity, caller reports operator of pick-up truck with plow attachment pulled up to her vehicle and offered drugs in exchange for newspaper, High Meadow Road, 3:20 a.m.
• Suspicious activity, hunter shooting geese in pond approximately 200 feet from Race Hill Road resident’s back door, 11:04 a.m. The hunter was gone when police arrived.
• Criminal trespass, youths entering empty Fonicello’s building and damaging property, 800 Boston Post Road.
• Criminal mischief, youths behind bushes throwing snowballs at cars, Whitfield Street, 2:13 p.m. Police located some youths and spoke with a parent.

Sunday, Dec. 21
No arrests were made.
• Between 11:08 a.m. and 7:29 p.m., snowy conditions caused five motor vehicle accidents at various locations and also three reports of vehicles stuck in snow and ice. No injuries were reported.
• Criminal mischief, resident running quad vehicles on Guilford Land Trust property causing extensive damage to property and wetlands, 1:50 p.m. Police were given the resident’s address.
• Breach of peace, caller reports resident yelling at caller’s girlfriend, after she allowed a dog to defecate on the resident’s lawn, Horseshoe Road.
• A woman seeking a place to stay for the night was given a ride from police headquarters to a local motel, 11:45 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 22
No arrests were made.
• Between 12:59 a.m. and 2:58 p.m., snowy conditions caused five motor vehicle accidents at various locations and also two reports of vehicles stuck in snow and ice. No injuries were reported.
• Suspicious activity; resident in Florida calling to report a possible burglary last week at home on Fox Run. The home was checked and found secure.
• Disabled tractor trailer blocking Long Hill Road, 700 block, 2:42 p.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 23
• A 44-year-old South Hoop Pole Road resident was served a warrant after police responded to a request to aid a person at a South Hoop Pole Road address, 7:04 p.m. The resident was wanted on a warrant by New Haven police. He was scheduled to appear in court Dec. 24.  
• Police assisted a resident reporting difficulty dealing with a family member suffering from medical and mental disabilities, 12:01 a.m.
• Between 7:30 a.m. and 4:24 p.m., icy conditions caused four motor vehicle accidents at various locations. No injuries were reported.
• Police responded to a request to assist a student at Guilford High School, 605 New England Road, 11:25 a.m.
• Family dispute, South Fair Street, 5:30 p.m.
• Family dispute, Lone Pine Trail, 7:27 p.m.
• Medical assistance, intoxicated person, Dunk Rock Road, 9:38 p.m.

Wednesday, Dec. 24
• A 53-year-old Waterbury resident was charged on a warrant with harassment. He was scheduled to appear in court Jan. 6.
Attempted vehicle theft, truck found backed into a tree, Flat Meadow Road, 8:02 p.m.
• Theft, wallet missing, Big Y Supermarket, 830 Boston Post Road, 2:50 p.m.
• Family dispute, North Mill Circle, 6:44 p.m.
• Theft, walker stolen from outside, Boston Terrace, 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 25
• A 41-year-old Branford resident was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both after he was stopped by Branford police for a motor vehicle violation, Boston Post Road, 600 block, 11:56 p.m. Branford police had tracked the vehicle after it was reported by CT State Police for erratic operation. He was scheduled to appear in court Jan. 5.
• Public hazard, fallen tree branch blocking Cooks Lane, power out to several houses, 5:43 a.m. CL&P was advised.
• Guilford Fire Department responded to assist a sailboat with five people aboard, stuck on rocks about 100 feet off shore of Chaffinch Island Park, 1:56 p.m.
• Suspicious person, male in dark clothing and hat loading wheelbarrow with construction items from job site, Hubbard Road, 2:18 p.m.; man appeared to be wheeling items to nearby home.
• Police assisted Madison police with a vehicle stop at the Guilford/Madison town line, Boston Post Road, 9:02 p.m.
• An incident of disorderly conduct was reported at a South Fair Street address, 10:20 p.m.

Friday, Dec. 26
No arrests were made.
• Criminal mischief, fence damaged overnight, Boston Post Road, 1000 block.
• Breach of peace, caller requests documentation alleging staff vs. resident, Fowlers Nursing Center, 10 Boston Post Road.

Saturday, Dec. 27
• A 35-year-old Durham Road resident was charged with disorderly conduct and second-degree assault after police responded to a report of a family dispute at her home, 11:53 a.m. She was scheduled to appear in court Dec. 29.
• A 51-year-old Madison resident was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both after he was stopped for a motor vehicle violation after being spotted driving erratically, Boston Post Road, 500 block, 7:56 p.m. He was scheduled to appear in court Jan. 5.
• A 36-year-old Boston Street resident was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both after police responded to a report of vehicle hitting bushes and driving erratically through the McDonald’s parking lot; vehicle then parked in front of a package store, 600 block, Boston Post Road, 8:59 p.m. He was scheduled to appear in court Jan. 5.
• Police were asked to assist Branford police in attempting to locate a vehicle registered to a Squaw Lane address reportedly occupied by two men who left a Branford diner without paying a $15 bill, 1:23 a.m.
• Police located three youths reported walking in the vicinity of Shore Line Plaza, 900 Boston Post Road, 1:52 a.m. They were given rides home.
• Medical assistance, male lying in snow on the side of the Boston Post Road, 1300 block, 2:30 a.m.
• Criminal mischief, mailbox damaged, Lake Drive.
• Family dispute, Durham Road, 11:53 a.m.

Sunday, Dec. 28
No arrests were made.
• Assistance was rendered to a Wauwinet Trail resident after a person speaking with the resident via telephone requested police check his welfare, 3:46 a.m.
• Landlord/tenant dispute, Nut Plains Road, 3:27 p.m.
• Animal nuisance, horse loose from stable area, Durham Road, 1400 block, 3:57 p.m.
• Theft from auto, items taken from wallet in car, Mill Road; 5:28 p.m.
• A group of youths throwing snowballs at a house were reported on White Birch Drive, 6:52 p.m.
• Family dispute, Mulberry Point Road, 7:25 p.m.
• An officer shot a deer reported injured and suffering in Durham Road, 3000 block, 8:54 p.m.

Monday, Dec. 29
• A juvenile warrant was served on a male resident at police headquarters, 5:13 p.m. No other details were available.
• Family dispute, Ironwood Road, 12:17 a.m.
• Harassment incident, Wal*Mart, 900 Boston Post Road, 2:01 p.m.
• Dumping violation, four bags dumped at Bittner Park, 1300 Durham Road; repeat offender.
• Suspicious activity, caller reports man on roof appears to be attempting to enter windows of neighbor’s home, Chimney Corner, 5:02 p.m.
• A burglary was reported at a Long Hill Road home, 2100 block; 6:14 p.m.
• Theft from auto, items taken from vehicle while parked at Big Y Supermarket, 830 Boston Post Road, reported at 10:18 p.m.
• Suspicious activity, man and woman heard screaming from inside cabin, Maupin Road, 11:20 p.m. The complainant was uncooperative when police arrived; no one was located at the cabin.

Tuesday, Dec. 30
No arrests were made.
• Police assisted CT State Police with a request for back-up at the scene of driving while intoxicated stop at I-95 exit 57 southbound, 12:52 a.m.
• Public hazard, wires down, tree resting on wires, Long Hill Road, 3000 block, 7:45 a.m. A cracked utility pole was also located. CL&P and AT&T were notified.
• Public hazard, wires down at mailbox, power cut off, Tanner Marsh Road, 7:58 a.m. CL&P was notified.
• A purse was found on the ground at the U.S. Post Office, 42 Water Street.
• Dispute via telephone, Whitfield Street, 8:52 p.m.

Wednesday, Dec. 31
No arrests were made.
• Theft, items missing from house for sale, Williams Drive.
• A woodpile on fire was reported on Nut Plains Road, 10:04 a.m. Guilford Fire Department responded.
• Violation town ordinance, resident pumping water into street, Seaside Avenue, 1:43 p.m.
• Public hazard, live wire down on property, Old New England Road, 2:36 p.m. CL&P was notified.
• Public hazard, tree branch down, power cut off, Murray Lane, 3:55 p.m. CL&P was notified.
• Suspicious activity, Dover Court resident reports doorbell rung twice, 7:59 p.m.; man seen heading toward Little Meadow Road.
• Between 9:09 and 10:36 p.m., icy conditions caused four motor vehicle accidents at various locations. No injuries were reported.
• Criminal trespass, caller reports catching person drinking inside house under construction, Cambridge Way; incident occurred last night.
• Public hazard, water over road due to high tide, Leetes Island Road, 900 block, 1:34 p.m.
• Medical assistance, sledding accident, West Lake Avenue,1:55 p.m.
• Theft, resident reports 15-year-old son used credit card without permission.
• Family dispute, Bluff View Drive, 4:01 p.m.
• Criminal mischief, mailbox damaged, Mohawk Trail.
• Medical assistance was requested to an unresponsive person, Stone House Restaurant, 506 Whitfield St., 7:44 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 1
No arrests were made.
• Medical assistance, pediatric asthma incident, Northwood Drive, 4:16 a.m.
• Police assisted Milford police in attempting to contact a Farmview Lane resident. The home appeared to be unoccupied.
• Burglary, ATV taken from garage, door lock missing, Three Mile Course.
• Family dispute, Nortontown Road, 8:26 p.m.

From Dec. 18 to Jan. 1, the Guilford Police Department received 481 calls for service. Police made eight arrests, investigated 44 motor vehicle accidents, and issued three infractions, 45 written warnings, and four verbal warnings. Police conducted nine child safety seat installations.
The Guilford Police Department operates an anonymous tip line to report any criminal or suspicious activity for investigation at 203-453-8240.
