CLMS MUSICIANS ACCEPTED TO MUSIC FESTIVAL

Fourteen talented Clark Lane Middle School Music students were accepted to participate in the upcoming Connecticut Music Educators Eastern Region Middle School Music Festival at Timothy Edwards MS in S. Windsor Febraury 27 & 28th. Students from the areas southeastern region middle schools auditioned in November and were selected to perform in March. Those students include Matthew Getty, Peter Wojtowicz, Jordan Strickland, Connor Megan, Nate Ashbey, Weston Long, Kim Neto, Ravjot Singh, Eilliot Diana, Richard Kao, Genevieve Nuttall, Andrew Frascarelli, Philip Rood, and Baird Welch-Collins.

WHS STUDENT MUSICIANS PERFORM at MUSIC FESTIVAL

The University of CT, Storrs, was the setting of the 46th Concert Festival of teh Connecticut Music Educators Association Eastern Region Concert on January 10, 2009, with 13 Waterford High School Music Department students performing with over 600 talented high school musicians from schools in southeastern Connecticut. Jeremy Allen, Natalie Palmer, Bethany Paul, Emily Qian, and Chelsey Rubin performed with the Symphonic Band, conducted by Cheshire HS Band Director John Kuhner. Michalel Ruggeri, Emily Diana, Maria Xing, Mallory Tober, Marina Nuttall, Kathy Li, Brianna Mathiowetz, and Ally Wang performed with the Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Walter Pavasaris, Fine and Performing Arts Cooridinator for the Lexington (MA) Publis Schools.

DESSERT NIGHT

The Waterford Orchestra Booster CLub will host the 5th annual DESSERT NIGHT featuring musical treats and delectable sweets on Wednesday, January 28th at Clark Lane Middle School Cafetorium. The event begins at 7:00 PM and will showcase string students in grades 6-12. Cost for adults is $6.00 and $3.00 for students/seniors. INTERNATIONAL NIGHT

THe Waterford Orchestra Booster Club will hold its 3rd annual INTERNATIONAL NIGHT on Wednesday, October 22nd, at Clark Lane Middle School. The event begins at 6:00 PM in the cafeteria, featuring fabulous foods from over 20 nations. In addition, music will be provided by orchestra students from Clark Lane Middle School and Waterford High School. Admission for adults is $6.00 and $3.00 for students and seniors.

AWARD WINNING COMPOSERS AND CONDUCTORS TO VISIT WATERFORD HIGH SCHOOL

The Waterford High School Orchestra will host 2 awards winning musicians as part of its year long musical events. On November 5th, internationally known conductor and award-winning member of ASCAP composer Elliot Del Borgo will visit Waterford HS and Clark Lane Middle School. He will spend the day working with orchestra students on some of his own works, in addition to his commissioned work for the Waterford High School Orchestra entitled Sinfonia a la Danza. The piece was commissioned by the Waterford Orchestra Boosters for the 2008/2009 High School Orchestra in recognition of its many years of excellence, growth, and achievement. It will be premiered in the November 19th music department concert.

In addition, to his music for the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, Mr. Del Borgo has published nearly 500 compositions for a variety of media. His music reflects the aesthetics of 20th century musical ideals through its eclectic nature and vigorous harmonic and rhythmic style. He has taught instrumental music in the Philadelphia public schools and was Professor of Music at the Crane School of Music, where he held teaching and administrative positions from 1966-1995.

Later in March 2009, Eastern Connecticut Symphony Conductor finalist David Commanday will visit Waterford High School and work with students. After playing principal cello at Tanglewood for Leondard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and Aaron Copland, he went on to study conducting. His conducting posts have included Music Director of the Boston Ballet, Music Director of the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra (GYBSO), Associate Condcutro of the San Diego Symphony, and Associate Conductor of the New Jersey Symphony. Mr. Commanday currently serves as Music Director of the Peoria Symphony.
