Written by Bob Grills
The New England District of Kiwanis sailed out of Boston on May 8, 2009 for the 5th time in 5 years to help Gov. Dick England make the District’s annual Governor’s visit to
Bermuda. This year’s ship was Norwegian Cruise Line’s “Sprit”, the largest of all the ships we have sailed on to date. The program was excellent and led for the third year by PLG Bob Tandy and his wife Debby from MA. There were 60 cruisers in our party, 50 Kiwanians and their wives and friends and for the first time 10 Masons joined the group.

The waters were relatively calm with only a few rolls and bumps on the first day at sea. The cruise included two cocktail parties, first to get acquainted and at the end of the cruise to plan for next year and talk over the fun they had on this year’s event. Lt. Governor Bailey of Bermuda set up the official visit of the Governor and his staff to meet with the officials of the Bermuda government. The highlight of the week was the large dinner banquet held Tuesday night that was held at the Fish Bone Restaurant at the DockYards. Great local music, a special fish soup that was made even tastier with sherry and hot peppers and local rum which you added to suit your taste. The main eating surprise was official Texas barbecue, which was very good. During the speaking program the president of the St Georges Club paid a special tribute to the New London Kiwanis Club for their generous contribution made to the St George’s Club on the event of their twentieth anniversary. Attending the cruise from New London was Bob and Valeda Grills and a prospective new member Mary Ellen Leone. Overall- a very good time was
had by everyone. Bob Tandy is already taking orders for next year’s cruise on May 21 – May 28, 2010. Be sure to mark your calendar now.

New London Kiwanis presents N.

Founded on January
21, 1915 in Detroit, Michigan, and with headquarters now in
Indianapolis, Kiwanis International is a worldwide organization of
service and community minded individuals who support children and
young adults. More than 600,000 Kiwanis family members in 96 nations
make their mark by responding to the needs of their communities and
pooling resources to address worldwide issues. Members of the
Kiwanis Family and its Service Leadership Programs volunteer more
than 21 million hours and invest more than $113 million in their
communities around the world.

Kiwanis clubs take on humanitarian and
civic projects that many public authorities are not prepared or able
to perform. A typical Kiwanis club plans hands-on projects focusing
on the special needs of the community. The Kiwanis Family includes
organizations for young people which are sponsored by clubs and the
Kiwanis International Foundation. K-Kids at the elementary school
level, Builders Clubs at the middle school level, Aktion Clubs for
people who are living with a disability, Kiwanis Junior for young
adults in Europe, Key clubs at the high school level, and Circle K
clubs at the college level.

One major
continuing project is the Young Children: Priority One program. This
special program addresses the needs of children through projects in
pediatric trauma, safety, childcare, early development, infant
health, nutrition, and parenting skills. Under this program, Kiwanis
has engaged in Worldwide Service Projects. Teaming with the United
Nations Children’s Fund, iodine deficiency disorders have been
virtually eliminated.

The Kiwanis Club of New

Salvation Army. Volunteers staffed the entrances at the Food Court,
Christmas Tree Shop and Charlie’s Eating & Drinking Saloon at
the Crystal Mall from 9:00 AM until 7:00 PM. Lieutenants Herb and
Miriam Rader from the Salvation expressed gratitude not only to the
volunteers, but all those who contributed during the day, especially

day. Kiwanis club members participating were Rich Cheatham, Bob
Grills, Marty Olsen, Andrew Ely, Tom Moriarty, Gordon Jackson, Andrea
