To clarify some information that appeared in the "Incredible Crabs" article by Mr. Rayner, horseshoe crabs are indeed not true crabs (class Crustacea) and are more closely related to Arachnids but own a class of their own called Merostomata. This name describes the unique nature of their mouth and the base of their legs that are used for feeding. All three of these classes are under the phylum Arthropoda.

The ways you can help:

-Call in tag numbers of crabs they see on the beach (phone number is on the tag)

-Flip crabs over that have become stranded

-Let us know of any area beaches where they have been seen in abundance to help us determine the best areas for surveying

-Take care when raking beaches to stay above the high tide line, so as not to disrupt the nests of eggs. Most the clutches (egg nests) are found around mean tide.

-Become a citizen scientist and help us collect data for the Long Island Sound Horseshoe Crab census. (we will provide education and training) Everyone is welcome and needed from students to retirees

Surveys are conducted at both the high tides on the three days/nights surrounding the New and Full moons in May, June and July. These Horseshoe crabs may look intimidating with their long pointed tails and armor like shells but these ancient creatures are harmless and easy to handle.

For more information or to become involved in the project, you may contact me at nauticgal@gmail.com.

What about the outrageous illegal use of ATV's on the roads of North Branford and Northford. Children race up and down town roads, going faster than cars. Parents who allow their children to ride these vehicles and disregard the law are poor role models. These vehicles with young unlicensed children at the wheel of unregistered vehicles are accidents waiting to happen. Why isn't an article written about this? Will it take a fatality to wake people up???
