    Latimer Brook

As land in the Latimer Brook watershed is built upon, our neighbors downstream appear to suffer.

Proper land use would not allow this to happen. Whenever land is developed in East Lyme under our current regulations, 30% of the land becomes impervious. Roads, driveways, roof tops, gutter systems, all shed water which used to be absorbed into the ground.

This water becomes stormwater carrying excess nutrients, pollutants, and sediment into our brook.

At the last land use public hearing, 3 neighbors spoke of severe flooding issues, where once they had none. One man said the brook overflows its banks and fills his basement with 3' of water in as little as 21/2 hours.

Our land use department must change its mode of doing businss. We must protect open space, wetlands,  and all watershed land.

We must let developer's know, go to some other town with your projects, for we respect our land and our water.
